Yesterday afternoon when Alicia got to Columbia to see Dr. Renner, he was quite concerned about the progress of the tumors. He did not feel comfortable with letting her leave without placing a tracheostomy. He stated the the progress of the tumors were "significant". With the rapid growth of the tumors Dr. Renner felt like the risk of her losing her airway was too great. They took her into surgery late yesterday evening. The surgery went well, but Alicia had her usual trouble with meds. She has a really hard time balancing pain control and nausea control. They got her comfortable and settled into a room in the Cardiac ICU. She will be unable to talk for a few days, and may struggle for a time after that. She does keep a notepad handy and communicates fine that way.
She was alert this morning. She's upset about the way things have gone the last couple days, but also understands that no one has a choice at this point. The cancer is calling all the shots right now. The topics she wanted to discuss today were: Bo, the fundraisers, and work. All the things that keep her mind off of here.
They wheeled her away for her feeding tube placement around 10:00. Once the feeding tube is placed she should be done with procedures and ready to relax and get strong enough for chemo. I don't know the current plan on when chemo will begin. She will most likely be in University Hospital until Monday.
Thank you all for the prayers. Thank you all for reaching out to her, and to us. If I haven't gotten back to you, hopefully I will soon.
